The PetaWeb, proposed for Next Generation Internet (NGI) infrastructures, is an innovative, geographically distributed, high-capacity switch architecture based on recent advances in optical and electronic switching technologies. The PetaWeb supports adaptive capacity allocation between edge modules for connectionless and connection-oriented traffic. This is achieved by the use of a rate-regulated packet switch, fast capacity allocation algorithms, and an agile core.
